OK I was talking to Robert and he said that the new OACers are a bunch of wankers. After all with nicknames like prom king and bubbles he may be right.:hurt: . Anyways robert said that when he was on the oac many moons ago they had a winter trip at John Bryan state park. Anyone down to start this up again? I was thinking about Jan or Feb?:cool_car:

It depends on what you mean by "trip". Hiking, I'll do in pretty much any kind of weather - actually, we did a hike there last year, I think, that had icicles in the pics. Camping...not so much. Mountain biking...depends on the weather.
Does the fact that Peaches (home of 20 microbrews on tap!) is close by have anything to do with it?

Okay, so it was almost 2 years ago...here are the pics, courtesy of TheMichelle. Let's do it!

PS It's illegal to kayak the Gorge shown in the pictures. It's hard to believe that's the Little Miami River, isn't it?

How about thinking about a hike through Old Man's Cave in Hocking Hills sometime this winter, too? It makes you think you aren't even in Ohio.
I've learned some lessons. 1) Find out when hunting season is, and avoid it. Thane isn't here to show up with orange items for us to wear. 2) Find out when the official Winter Hike at Hocking Hills is, and avoid it, too. Shuffling along shoulder-to-should is not what it's all about. 3) If there are several inches of crusty snow on the ground, it's really a good workout, but the leader gets a reputation for "death marches" which is really hard to shake.

Legal Smegal. We have a lawyer in our midst who'll claim temporary insanity. I hope it's a federal case so I can wave Hi! to my brothers on TV.
Hunters orange- 4 dollar hat at Tractor Supply
Hiking- my vote is for Yellowstone but I'll take Hocking Hills or John Bryan or Michigan at the Wetherspoons. Does anyone own snow shoes? I want to learn.
Camping- with electric, we can conquer the cold.
Peaches- Hell ya!

Let me check out some things - I think there might be something in the Cuyahoga Valley Rec Area (AKA "snowbelt") that rents them. This could be a good day trip, and it's one of the many items on my Bucket List.

How about this? http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/upload/wintersports.pdf
It's got a lodge (for you, Mary) and it's the "epicenter".

The gorge is simply at its best during a blizzard/snowstorm, too. No others to disturb that sound of silence and the pure beauty of the place. I'm with Gwen on this, but I've moved to NC and only have occasional trips back to Ohio now. My big regret is that I never got out on the water with any of you guys, but it was great getting to know you in other ways.

So I'm a little slow in showing up...Brian, you are right it must have been late 70's/early 80's the club did winter camps an JB State Park. It was probably more for comraderie than anything else...nothing like comiserating in the cold with your fellow paddling comanions. The camps were usually done in January-ish and everybody brought lots of food. Typically, my dad was designated chili chef and brought a huge batch for whoever showed up. People cross country skied, sledded down the hill to the lower parking lot, went on hikes, and ate lots of food.
On a side note, several members made a pact to paddle at least once a month for the entire year. Which we did against our better sense. We even piggy backed a ski trip to Seven Springs on President's day weekend in '82 with a loop run on the Yough...I wasn't very smart back then either.
