The Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) is a Dayton, Ohio based club whose primary focus is whitewater kayaking. We also have members interested in a myriad of outdoor sports who are always looking for people to play with or teach or learn from. We have bikers, runners, hikers and skiers and are always looking for more!
The club has a very busy paddling schedule from early spring through late fall. We have trips to West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virgina and Pennsylvania among others to suit all skill levels. We can also help you find certified kayak instruction here in Ohio to get you started.
Our club is proud to have many family groups as members, and many of our camping trips feature activities for the non-paddler and children, including hiking, campfire science night, ice cream socials, pizza night and random good times. But after the kids go to bed, there is plenty of campfire entertainment for the adults! If you're worried about noisy late nights you can camp in "geezerville" where posted quiet hours are strictly observed! Our club members often coordinate indoor events like hockey games, wine tastings and movies during our "down" time to enhance the relationships formed on the river and in camp. You will find new friends among the members of our club.
The July General Membership meeting will be held on July 16th, 5:30 pm at Whitewater Warehouse in Dayton. The meeting will be held in conjunction with a river cleanup event sponsored by WWWH. C'mon out and join the fun.
Currently, there are no agenda items for the meeting.
The combined May/June meeting was held at the campfire on Saturday night of the Memorial Day trip to WV. Mike Logan was nominated for President for 2009. Michelle Browning, Steve Flynn and Gwen English offered to continue in their present offices. Elections will be held on the Labor Day trip. Other nominations are still open until then.
In light of rising gas prices, it is becoming more and more important to tip the shuttle drivers, especially those who drive all the time.
Hard to believe but Memorial Day is here! We will be descending upon the rivers and creeks of West Virginia for another epic weekend!
Things to know:
Saturday and Sunday mornings we will be organizing the day's trips at 9am in the large field across from the RV sites.
After paddling Saturday join us for Gwen's happy hour appetizerpalooza. She's bringing an awesome Tex-Mex dip, everyone else bring your fave snacks or just show up and eat! It's all good! This is a chance for everyone to regroup before dinner and swap stories about their day.
Saturday's main event will be the May/June membership meeting. The meeting will begin at 8pm sharp around the main campfire. The club president will not be in attendance so the VP (me) will be in charge. The only item currently on the agenda is officer nominations for 2009. There are openings for 2009 officers so please think about volunteering. The club is volunteer-driven and we are always looking for members to step into leadership positions. If you have any questions, or won't be able to make the meeting please contact myself, Gwen or Steve. If you aren't sure about being an officer there are other volunteer options available with the newsletter or website. Again you can contact any current officer with questions.
If you have any questions or concerns when you get into camp you can find me in my brother's pop-up. It's the one with a lot of dogs, not to be confused with the camper with the drooling dog/bear and hyper shepherd. If you're a new boater just ask someone and they'll point me out!
The meeting was held during the Saturday night communal dinner at Spring Fling at Rocky Fork and included new boaters taking instruction with WWWH and a team of pros from Pyranha. About 60+ people put away 70 burgers and 70 dogs. Thanks to Team Isble on the grill and everyone else who lent a hand. The 50/50 raffle split $361 dollars between perennial winner Dan Cusick and the Club. Thanks to Todd “nobody does it better” Stradtman for handling the raffle with his usual flair.
Mike Logan spoke on the OAC’s “River Buddy” program for new boaters and passed out a survey. He talked about the Caesar Creek release as a good next step for new boaters and encouraged experienced boaters to come out and support the program.
Amy Dingle of Five Rivers Metroparks spoke about opportunities for collaboration with Five Rivers Outdoors. She gave an update on the progress for a whitewater play area on the Mad River (possibly ready by fall of ’09) and said that the first step would be a parking area at the Harshman Road bridge.
The Pyranha pros spoke, offering playboating instruction at the Chutes and new boats to demo.
Twelve members were present at Bullwinkle’s in Middletown.
Five members of the Venture Crew will be kayaking with us at Spring Fling. Providing boats and gear for them was discussed, as well as the need for a pool practice prior to being on the river. A meeting with the leaders will be held at 7:30, March 25th. Steve Flynn, Michelle Browning and Mike Logan will attend.
Spring Fling will be April 18-20 on Paint Creek and Rocky Fork. Camping will be at Rocky Fork, with a charge of $5 per adult per night. The Club will provide the main dish (burgers and dogs, or maybe something else) and tableware. Each member will bring a dish to share and his/her own beverage. Students from WWWH and the Venture Crew are our guests.
A survey supporting the Whitewater Park on the Mad River is available on the WWWH website. Various members volunteered to make sure that it was passed on to Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, Cincy Paddlers, Keelhaulers, as well as the membership of the OAC. See IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT on this Forum for more details.
A coversheet for a membership packet was discussed and jobs were assigned.
A vote was taken regarding raising membership fees to $15 for a single and $20 for a family. It passed.
Nominations for officers need to be made by Memorial Day, and voting will take place at Labor Day.
Paddling Pig is the next event, with Head Pig John Randolph as the coordinator.
